Warli Art Workshop – An Artsy Affair

Many of us have felt the urge to pick up a paintbrush and explore where it might lead us, but we have never actually got down to doing it. Under the watchful eye of an expert, we will create our very own tribal artwork known as the Warli art. Warli art is a beautiful folk art of Maharashtra. The most important aspect of the painting is that it does not depict mythological characters or images of deities, but community life.
The Warlisor Varlisare an indigenous tribe living in mountainous as well as coastal areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat. They speak an unwritten Varlilanguage which belongs to the southern zone of the Indo-Aryan languages. The wall paintings by the Warlisuse a very basic graphic vocabulary: a circle, a triangle and a square. The circle and triangle come from their observation of nature –the circle represents the sun and the moon, and the triangle is derived from mountains and pointed trees.
